What is a Hudson Test?
The Hudson Test is a series of psychometric tests that covers areas of ability, knowledge, skills, personality traits, and job/academic potential.
The test series is split into three sections: abstract, numerical, and verbal reasoning. Each test is also available for different levels of the business team: operational workers, junior managers, and middle/senior managers.
Together, the tests provide insight into the following skills:
Speed and accuracy
Spatial insight
Analytical insight
Ability to plan
Technical insight
At the end of the Hudson testing process, the employer gets a report with an overall score indicating that candidate’s level, together with three sub-scores indicating their working style and strengths.
Hudson numerical reasoning test
The numerical reasoning test assesses your ability to deal with numbers quickly and accurately. These tests contain questions that assess your knowledge of ratios, percentages, number sequences, data interpretation, financial analysis and currency conversion.
The exam is in multiple-choice format, with four available choices for each question. Each question is timed individually at 90 seconds, so your capacity for swift and practical thought is under scrutiny. The system will move the applicant to the next question when the time is up, whether the question is answered or not.
There will be an on-screen calculator offered for performing calculations, but using some scrap paper for notes and calculations is advisable.
Sample numerical question
How many more Australian Dollars (AUD) could you buy with 2,000 British Pounds in 2022 compared to 2023?
a) $360
b) $420
c) $520
d) $1,580
Answer : a) $360.
£2,000 × 1.49 = AUD 2,980
£2,000 × 1.31 = AUD 2,620
2,980 - 2,620 = AUD 360
Hudson verbal reasoning test
The verbal reasoning test evaluates your understanding and comprehension skills. You will be presented with a short passage of text, typically of between six to ten lines, which you’ll answer questions on. These are normally in the ‘True, False, Cannot Say’ multiple-choice format, although there are a range of alternatives too.
The verbal reasoning test is also timed per question, rather than as a whole. The online assessment system will move the applicant onto the next question, regardless of whether it has already been answered or not.
The 90 seconds provided to answer each question will also include reading time, so being able to rapidly process and understand the information given is a key part of candidate success.
Ultimately, the verbal reasoning test is there to show the extent of how well you can analyse written information.
Sample verbal question
Statement : Free range poultry is less profitable for farmers to produce than battery chickens.
a) Cannot tell
b) True
c) False
Answer : a) Cannot tell. The second paragraph details both advantages and disadvantages to producing free range chicken. While it costs more to raise free range chickens, they can be sold at a higher price. No direct economic comparison is given with battery chickens.
Hudson abstract reasoning test
The abstract reasoning test (also called the conceptual reasoning test) is designed to measure your lateral thinking skills and your ability to think logically in order to solve problems. This test will use shapes, patterns and figures, rather than numbers and words.
Simply put, this is part of the exam that most closely resembles a standard IQ test. Employers will typically use this part of the testing system as an indication of a candidate’s ability to think rationally and analytically.
Within a workplace context, this will show how likely a candidate is to be pragmatic with difficulties and problems that may arise.
Preparation is key to get to grips with the abstract thinking that this part of the Hudson assessment demands, so use our logical reasoning test resources to find out more about how they work.
Sample abstract question
Which of the boxes comes next in the sequence?
Answer : E). Large shapes alternate between diamond and ring (where ring number decreases by one) with each turn. Diagonal corner lines appear in each alternate frame and increase in an anti-clockwise direction with each turn. For every diamond shape, the corner square decreases by one in the following frame, in an anti-clockwise direction.
Hudson Business Attitudes Questionnaire
Rather than being a test of skills of ability, this is a personality questionnaire where there are no right or wrong answers. However, it is key to remain aware of the types of characteristics suited to the job that you have applied for, so that your answers reflect well.
We would also recommend practicing personality tests, so that you are in a strong position to tackle this test at your assessment.
This is an online personality questionnaire designed to understand how you, the candidate, will behave within a work environment. It focuses on five core personality traits including:
Conscientiousness
Extraversion
Openness
Altruism
Emotional stability
Within the assessment, you will be presented with statements that you will be required to rate according to how strongly you agree.
